A couple of months ago, I made the switch from Stitch Fix to Trunk Club. I'd been using SF for a long time, yet I felt like they never really got it right. The clothes they sent me were often the wrong size, and they all seemed more suited for someone, ahem, older than me. I'd get so excited waiting for my box each month—only to open it and feel like I got coal for Christmas.
Last month I got my first Trunk Club box, and while I only kept a couple of things, it felt like there was potential. I had gotten some things I specifically asked for as well as a couple of wildcards that I really liked. This month was even better, and I'm really excited to show you what I got! Read on to find out what I loved!
"Betty" Stretch Ankle Pants by NYDJ, size 4, $114
I asked for black ponte pants in this box, but according to my stylist, there weren't any available in my size. These were an all right substitute, but they just didn't seem that flattering on me. They're supposed to be skinny pants, but they were pretty loose throughout. I will say that these did fit very comfortably in the waist, though.
One thing that really disappointed me was that my stylist sent me regular-sized pants, which is odd because this style does come in petite sizes. The regular ones have a 28" inseam, while the petite ones are 24". You can see how much I had to cuff them! I could have easily gotten them hemmed, but coupled with the fit problems, I didn't think it was worth it.
Whisper Cotton V-Neck Tank by Madewell, size XS, $18.50
You really can't go wrong with Madewell. It's a perfect simple tank that I'm sure will go with everything I already have. I can't wait to knot it over a high-waisted midi skirt or tuck it into my jeans this spring!
Like most Madewell tops, I found it to be the perfect length. It hits right around my hips, so I know it'll look great with just the front tucked in. It also skims my body without being tight, which I love. My only qualm? Just be warned that it's pretty thin, so a nude bra is a must.
Key Trim Chain Loafer by Topshop, size 5.5, $80
The first thing that drew me to these was the color. They're a nice blush that borders on nude, which makes them great for mixing and matching with pretty much any other color. I'd been looking for a new pair of loafers like these, and I actually prefer them to my current pair from Gap.
These fit true to size, and I was excited that these come in size 5.5! Sometimes size 6 can be a little too big, so this was perfect. I will say that these do take a little tugging to pull on, but they don't slip once they're on.
Speaking of slipping, though, these have very little traction, so save them for spring!
Slouchy Knot Front Blouse by Topshop, size 6, $55
I could write a love song to the color—such a perfect pale pink!—and the style is so flowy and feminine. The knot at the waist is really flattering, too. I found that it hit me at my natural waist without bunching up, which is difficult to find. The sleeves are simply a dream, and they tuck easily into blazer sleeves. This is unquestionably one of those rare pieces that can go from the office to a date in a snap.
One thing to note, though: there is a huge slit in the back, meaning you need a backless bra with it if you're going to wear it on its own (i.e. without a blazer or jacket). I also tried wearing it with a bralette, but it showed through and ruined the look.
Stitch Detail Sleeve Sweater by Topshop, size 6, $50
I went back and forth on this one. This sweater is deliciously cozy, and while it has a slouchy fit, it's cut rather short so I'm not swimming in fabric. It's 18" long, which is just right for short girls. I imagine it would have more of a cropped fit on taller folks, though.
I typically prefer pale pink and blush, so this is a little more vibrant than I'm used to. However, I have been pretty stuck on neutrals lately, so this might be a good way to shake things up! I'm looking forward to pairing it with white jeans in the coming months.
Mixed Stripe Tee by BP, size S, $25
You guys know how I feel about stripes, but this top didn't do anything for me. It has a boxier fit than I normally would like, plus it runs a bit long. The contrasting sleeve details are cute, for sure, but that didn't make up for how it fit on me.
Plus, it's not that well made. I noticed that he stripes started slanting at the bottom—and it wasn't on purpose. There are definitely better striped tee alternatives out there!
Pleat Front Trousers by Leith, size S, $55
I want to marry these pants. They are truly the most comfortable pants I currently own, and yes, that does include pajamas! They have a super high elastic waist, and they're very forgiving of my quarterlife crisis tummy because they flare out a little at the hips.
The only problem is the length (27" inseam), but thankfully I can get these hemmed for free at Nordstrom. I'm anticipating wearing them for every occasion imaginable. In fact, I even like them the way I styled them for the photos, and I wasn't even trying. That's how magical they are.
Classic Denim Jacket by J. Crew, size small petite, $110
The name says it all. This is a no-frills denim jacket with a shrunken fit. The distressed wash looks really great—it looks perfectly lived-in. It hits a little above the hips, and I like that because I've owned longer jackets that all seem to swallow up my waist. Not a problem here!
I did find that the sleeves were actually a little short, but since I'm going to cuff them anyway, it wasn't much of a problem for me.
Ankia Suede Pump by Vince Camuto, size 5.5, $119.95
Another classic! I needed a pair of nude pumps—the ones I have right now have a round toe, which isn't as flattering as a pointed one, plus they're a little too small. These fit true to size and look great on. Again, I was really excited that they come in size 5.5, so I won't have to worry about slipping out.
I will say that they aren't super comfortable, but then, they're heels! I tried wearing them around the apartment a bit to break them in, but the ball of the foot is still a little tough. Other than that, these are great investment shoes. I finally have a good pair that can take me from work to weekend to weddings!
So there you have it! Based on this box, I'm going to continue ordering from Trunk Club. I was mostly happy with how everything fit, plus I got a good mix of classic pieces and ones that are a little "out there" for me!
