My Search for the Perfect Petite Camel Coat

Coat: Loft 2P (similar here and here) Dress: Loft XSP (similar here and hereBoots: Marc Fisher 6 (on sale!)

Every fashion blogger worth her salt has the same essential item: a lightweight wool camel coat. All of them, except me—until a couple weeks ago.

Camel coats have this mysterious power to enhance every single outfit they're paired with. They can pump up plainer outfits, like my all-black ensemble here, but they can also tone down looks that have a lot going on. Either way, the end result is always something polished. (Hell, I've worn one with leggings, and the effect is still the same.)

I'd been hunting for one in vain for a full year before I had any luck. These coats are ridiculously popular, yet brands never seem to make enough of them in petite sizes. Usually when I clicked on one, I'd find that it was completely sold out in my size. And it gets worse. I can't tell you how many times I'd be lucky enough to add one to my cart and hit "Purchase" only to get a notification telling me the coat is no longer available. Talk about disappointment.

I tried thrifting—both in person and online—to no avail. If anything, it was even harder because the minute one of those coats appeared, it would be snatched up by someone faster than me. Which is crazy, because I was getting to be pretty damn quick, myself.

I'd avoided eBay for a while, though. I've used it in the past, but it's so user-unfriendly that I didn't want to resort to it. There's just. so. much. I didn't want to dig through it and waste my time hunting for something that might not even exist.

But desperate times call for desperate measures. One morning, I carefully set my filters and crossed my fingers to find that coat. To my surprise, I found it on the first page of results: a legitimate Loft camel coat in size 2P...for $15. I snapped it up immediately.

When it arrived, I put it on and it fit like a glove. Whether I was wearing a sweater or a tee underneath, it was exactly right. The sleeves came down to my wrists, not my fingertips. The only issue is that it was a little too long, but the local tailor had that taken care of in a week.

Now I wear this thing everywhere. Brunch, trivia night, walking the dog—if I were dating, I'd wear it for that, too. I've even thrown it over my leggings and shopped at the fancy Jewel. I simply can't get enough of it. I want to be buried in it. Is that too much? I don't think so.

If you're a petite girl like me, have hope! I fully believe that the perfect coat is within your reach, too.
